| Q.
What is a Log Home Dealer, and what exactly
do they do?
The Wilderness Company is represented
by Independent Dealers throughout the United
States. These experienced professionals
provide personal service and assist you
throughout the process. As log home owners
themselves, their knowledge of the building
process makes them an invaluable resource.
You should meet with your local dealer
to see their model home, or take a tour
of some customers' homes in your area. Dealers
can answer questions and explain design
and materials options. They can help you
custom-design your home from your plan or
ours. They'll provide on-site advice at
the time your logs are delivered. Best of
all, they share your passion for log home
living. Consider your dealer a friend you
can rely on.
GreatWilderness Log Homes is the Pacific
Northwest Dealer for The Wilderness Company.
We begin by learning just what the buyer
wants, and then helping them achieve the
home of their dreams. In addition to helping
select (or design) a floor plan, we also
help them decide on log species; log profile;
corner styles; as well as choosing between
our full log or Insul-R (insulated log)
systems. GreatWilderness customers may also
choose window and door styles, log stain
colors, as well as the style and color of
their roof tiles. In fact, The Wilderness
Company offers enough options to guarantee
that their home will be unique among the
thousands sold since 1972.
As an authorized dealer, we don’t
just stop with the design. We can also help
buyers choose their interior furnishings
such as flooring, cabinetry, fixtures, and
appliances which are not part of the standard
package. We can also help find a builder
for their home (if they don’t already
have one) because GreatWilderness Log Homes
is a member of local Master Builder’s
Associations and the Log Homes Council of
the National Association of Home Builders.
Once our buyer’s Log Home “package”
arrives at their building site, we verify
that they have received exactly what they
ordered. We then maintain contact with the
buyer until construction is complete and
they are satisfied with their beautiful
new Wilderness Log Home.
Finally, we also offer an optional maintenance
program that will keep their log home looking
like new for all the years they own it.
This program includes regular inspections
for a variety of conditions that might cause
harm to even the best built home.
Q. What is a Log Home “Package?”
This is the way most major Log Home manufacturers
sell their homes. Some might even call it
a “log home kit.” It simply
means that certain specific components of
your home will be supplied by the manufacturer,
loaded onto flatbed trucks, and delivered
to your construction site ready for your
builder to erect. Not all manufacturers
offer the same items in their “Packages”
however, making it difficult to compare
the cost and quality between different manufacturers.
The Wilderness Company offers one of the
most complete Log Packages in the industry.
We call it a “dry-in” package
because once erected, it is weather tight
and ready for completion of all interior
surfaces.
Q. What is the best species of log
for our Pacific Northwest climate?
We actually have many climates here in
the Pacific Northwest, ranging from cold
and wet, to hot and dry, depending on where
and when! The Wilderness Company has a variety
of log species to choose from: Western Red
Cedar, Northern White Cedar and Northern
White Pine are standard. Other species are
available on special order.
Because of today’s high quality stains
and preservatives, any species is acceptable
in just about any region of the country.
The question of which species is the right
one for your home is mostly based on budget,
and aesthetics. Red Cedar is the most expensive,
Northern White Pine the least, and each
has its own special look when stained. So
rather than asking “Which log species
should I use”, you can now ask “which
log species do I want.”
Q. Can your Dealership help us find
land? Can you build the home for us?
Many Log Home buyers begin with a floor
plan they love, and then start looking for
property to build it on. Sometimes this
works, sometimes it doesn’t.
We suggest that you start with only a general
list of “needs and wants” for
your Log Home, such as number of bedrooms
and bathrooms needed, and the general style
wanted, and then go looking for your land.
Too many buyers have been disappointed that
the floor plan/style they fell in love with
first would not work on the piece of land
that they fell in love with later. What
a dilemma! Just remember that it is much
easier to modify a floor plan to fit the
land, than it is to adjust the land to fit
the plan!
Because GreatWilderness Log Homes is not
a Realtor™, we cannot help you directly
with your land purchase. We do however maintain
a relationship with Real Estate professionals
who specialize in land, and we would be
happy to recommend them for your search.
GreatWilderness Log Homes is also not a
General Contractor, but we are a member
of several local Master Builders Associations
and other national building trades organizations.
Therefore, we can offer you our assistance
in selecting and working with a contractor
in your area who has the necessary skills
and experience to build your Log Home. We
will consult with your builder throughout
the construction process to ensure that
your home is built to Wilderness Company
quality standards.
Q. What will a Log Home cost?
Log Home costs are comparable to the cost
of any custom-built home. Most Log Home
manufacturers publish a “Package Price”
for each standard model, as well as costs
of optional items. At The Wilderness Company,
our published prices include the complete
“dry in” package delivered to
your building site as we’ve mentioned
above.
The cost of any home is based on many factors.
With Log Homes, the cost per square foot
is influenced by several choices you will
make, as well as the floor plan itself:
Log species, log diameter, log style, corner
style, complexity of roof lines, grade of
doors and windows, size of optional decks
and porches, etc. What this means is that
two homes of identical square footage could
vary greatly in their actual cost per square
foot!
Therefore, The Wilderness Company will
work with you through the design phase to
prepare an initial Proposal based on your
choice of options, giving you an accurate
starting point to compute the overall cost
of your home. We will work with you to realize
the Log Home of your dreams, while at the
same time keeping that Dream within your
construction budget.
