What is Apheresis (A-fur-ee-sis)?
Apheresis is a special donation process that allows a donor to
give one or more specific components, like platelets. Platelets
are vital blood cells that help form clots and control bleeding.
How does Apheresis work?
Blood is drawn from your arm using a single needle into a sterile
plastic blood bag. Your blood will "take a spin" in a centrifuge
to separate your platelets from other blood components. The platelets
are collected in a separate bag and the remainder of your blood is
returned to you.
Is Apheresis donation safe?
Yes. The donor services staff is specially trained and the
computerized cell separator carefully monitors each donation.
As with all other donations, the Apheresis kit is new, sterile
and used only once.
What are the donor guidelines?
Be between the ages of 17-69, weight 110 pounds or more, most
prescriptions you take will not disqualify: Blood Pressure Medicine,
Antidepressants, Hormones/Birth control, Thyroid Medicine, and
Cholesterol Medicine. Please remember No aspirin 36 hours, no
ibuprofen 24 hours and no antibiotics prior to donating but Tylenol
is ok.
How often can I donate?
Platelets expire after 5 days, so it is important to donate as
often as you can. You can donate up to 24 times a year and your
body will replenish the platelets you donate within 48 hours.
Where are you located?
We are located at 960 Johnson Ferry Road Suite 335 Atlanta, GA 30342
(in walking distance from Northside Hospital at the Doctor's Centre)
